Juggling Bot
The creaters of Disney came up with this new design of a real-life humanoid. This was initially to be used in theme parks, but as it becomes more advanced could possibly venture out to more use. This humanoid design in particular was made to be able to juggle. What is good about these kinds of robots are that they are able to have human interaction without any dangerous physical contact. Along with juggling, to have interaction with humans, the robot is able to perform human-like actions and track people's faces allowing it to turn to certain people as it moves. They have also worked to allow the robot to show emotion, such as hanging its head in shame when it drops a ball.
Compared to Humans
I believe that this robot could be used successfully for entertainment. I personally have been to Disney in the past few years and remember seeing a human-like robot in the area of the waiting lines. Specifically, it was a Mr. Potato Head while waiting in line for a Toy Story ride. As it was entertaining during a very long wait, it did begin to get repetitive over time. This is where there is always room for improvement. At this early stage of creation, it is understandable that there may not be a huge amount of different skits or sayings that the robot can perform. For a short range, this is fine, but in this circumstance the ride was new which made the wait even longer. As the robot was good entertainment at first, after hearing everythnig it had to say, it could get anoying. Also, being in line for that long, I was able to see one of its glitches. One of the skits the robot performed was taking its ear out, holding it in its hand, then after an amount of time, being able to put it back into place. This went along with a saying as well. While doing this, its speech became slurred while taking out the ear. This resulted in the robot dropping the ear to the ground and shutting off. Maintenance people had to come around and fix this problem.
As anything else, there are always pros and cons with any new item on the market. I do believe this is a good idea in the long run for entertainment in Disney lines and other places. It's a great way to provide easy and different entertainment in line. Although as of right now, from personal experience, they are repetitive and prone to glitches. I'm sure that the people of Disney are working on this and will come up with an even better product over the course of these next few years, as all of their parks are kept at very high quality standards. I am very interested in where a product like this will go and the advancements it could make, as with techology these days, the options are endless.
