Sketchy Bot
The Sketchy Bot was thought of by the German's Fraunhofer Institute. Though it says the robot's performance is considerly improving, it is still only thought of as a hobby for this robot. The way this robot carries out the process of its artwork, it uses sensors to measure the reflectivity of different materials such as street signs or safety devices. Advancing in what it can do, it also used its skills in a more creative way, showing the final product at a gathering.
As a whole, I do not really see a point for this Sketchy Bot. What makes me wonder even more is how they say it is "just a hobby for this bot". Even the first time I read this sentence, I was wondering to myself, how does a robot have a hobby? To me this would have to mean that the robot has emotions to form opinions on likes and dislikes and last I knew, I've grown up always hearing that robots don't have any feelings. This puts a kink into this statement. There must be something in the robot telling it to draw a type of painting, such as the sensors described, which would mean that the robot is not having a say in this. Therefore, the robot does not have an opinion if it is just drawing what is seen through its sensors. This would not make it the robot's hobby, but only what the robot is capable to do due to the design of it. In this case the robot's designers would have chosen the "hobby" for the robot if you still want to go down that route.
Other than the false statement, I still can not find a helpful place for this robot to perform. It obviously wouldn't be with famous artists, because they would be able to outdraw this robot anyday. They would have no need for it and if anything, would only hold themselves back. Another possibility would be in somewhere such as a school environment. I believe they would admire it more and at minimum, admire it and the little that it does. Lastly, I could see it used as an individual use, possibly at home. The problem I see here is most likely the cost, and even if the person is a bad drawer, there is a computer and clip-art available to print out at any time. There still wouldn't be enough use out of it to really need it in your home.
If I had to pick, I would say putting this robot into a school environment would be the most helpful. Here the students (especially in the elementary level) are not looking for as much as a detailed and excessive painting as the professionals would be. It also would be put into better use than just the individual use option. Although I still do not agree that this robot is ready for any kind of use because it is still in the beginning processes of design and is still very clumsly when drawing. This would need to be fixed seeing it is called a "Sketchy Bot", meaning this should be shown as its strength.
